unsuccessful Catalogue 5-9 downloads

Asked by Daniel

Hi

I have many times successfully download all the star catalogues before.

Had a new install of Stellarium 0-12-4 on a new laptop. The downloads of catalogue 5-9 seems to progress normally (viewing the progress bar) and when 100% the option to get catalogue 6-9 does not appear. The Catalogue 5-9 still remains and I can progress further.
I have uninstalled and then re installed Stellarium using the downloaded installer for a fix but doesn't make a difference.

Any suggestions?

Dan

Thanks Alexander for the suggestion.

I have no clue really where to go to manually remove catalogs and what
file names they are.
What would the file name be for the 5-9 catalogue?
Is is as simple as doing a search and deleting the catalogue files and
then try a download again?

Regards Dan

Thanks
That was useful.
The file i was trying to download was stars_4_1v0_0.cat
But as I said, the download seems completed but when I look in the
location where they are all stored. this file doesnt exist.
Not sure what this means.

Dan

Good Idea. That is the kind of solution I was lookin for.
Thanks for this link.
The file was downloaded successfully (and much quicker) and placed in
the directory with the other catalogues in Stellarium.
I started stallarium but still no use of this catalogue. Im still stuck
with the button to download it which still doesnt work unfortnately .
Looks like its not so simple ;-(
I was hoping I could download the other Catalogues this way also in due
course.

Any other suggestions would be appreciated
Regards
Dan.

Just for more information, I looked up the properties of the
stars_4_1v0_1 file and it says its a secuity catalogue.

Apon trying to just open it, a message saying this file is " invalid for
use as a security catalogue" comes up.
Confusing!
What does it all mean and does it have any baring on my issues at the
moment?
Anyway, I thought this might help

Dan

This file is NOT a security catalogue, obviously. Windows "detects" file types just by file name ending, which is even hidden by default for known ("registered") file types (a security problem if you ask me). If another programmer uses ".cat" for his own catalogue, opening by doubleclick just starts the wrong application registered as default application for that file type. Mac filesystem is better in this regard. Also checking a "magic byte" at the beginning of certain file types could avoid confusion. But not on Windows.

Stellarium's .cat files have their very own formats, in practice just readable by Stellarium.

Thanks Gzotti

I suspected it was something like that, but ths was additional
information which I was adding just trying to help with my core of
enquiries on why Stellarium doesnt load up the extra stars after an
apparent successful download.
So far I tried the link Alexander suggested to directly download the
stars_4_1v0_1 catalogue and still no good.

So my question now is for those who have done this before is, by
manually downloading a star catalogue file and simply placing it in the
folder where all the other catalogues are kept, does this allow
Stellarium to "see" this and apply it to the program for use in the charts?
Is there something else that needs to be done?

Regards
Dan

Hi

I have just installed Stallarium v0.13.0 to see if I can resolve having
extra downloaded star catalogues work in stellarium after an apparent
successful download. The problem of having no extra star data persists
after the download..
There are no error messages and there are no extra catalogues loaded
into the stars folder. ( if that is the correct folder to look into that
is )
Does anyone know what the file name is to place a manually downloaded
star catalogue into, and what if any configuration needs to be done?

I can add to the information about the problem, but I do not have a fix.

I have attempted to add the catalogs (via Stellarium's own dialog) while in (fully updated) Xubuntu 14.04, both 32 bit and 64bit, and most recently, 15.04 beta 2, 64 bit. (i7 desktop). Also, I have tried to install in several other Ubuntu flavors, all with the same result.

Stellarium stumbles between completing catalogs 4,5,6. In the dialog Stellarium says it is downloading one catalog, and in the little information box in the lower right corner of the window, at the same time, says it is downloading a different catalog. The download appears to complete but the dialog still shows the option to download the same file again. As many times as I let the catalog download, Stellarium repeats this cycle. So I think it is an error in the catalog download script.

John, you need version 0.12.6 or 0.13.2.

I've been trying to download star catalogues 4 - 9 from within Stellarium, and they also fail for me. I'm using v. 0.12.4 on Xubuntu 14.04. The Stellarium log file gives me this as the download fails:

Found file "/home/mike/.stellarium/stars/default/stars_4_1v0_0.cat" , checking md5sum..
Error: File "stars/default/stars_4_1v0_0.cat" is corrupt, MD5 mismatch! Found "36edd9931b07fc0737c15fbb1458069b" expected "3abe460ce558418dbdab9a251c173cc4"

Have we got to upgrade Stellarium or summat?

I had this problem and reported in a post above. Now everything is working fine and I do not know exactly what I did, or even when I did it. However, I do recall about the same time an unrelated problem due to a physically damaged AMD graphics card, replaced by a near equivalent Nvidia required that I choose a different driver. I chose the proprietary. Shortly after this problem just vanished.

Xubuntu 14.04 64 bit fully up to date. On Intel i7

Thank you Alex and Mike
