turn off single constellation

Asked by Paul

Stellarium...WONDERFUL software. I figured out how to turn on a single constellation using your answers page, thank you. Now I am able to turn on Ursa Major, Ursa Minor, Draco...but I am unable to turn each one off in order to move to the next one. What I want to be able to do (I always ask my kids, "what's it like to want?") is to talk about a constellation, outline it with my laser, turn on the lines, turn on the artwork (get some "ooohss," and "aahhhs"), then turn that one constellation off. Then I would go to the next constellation and repeat. Is this at all possible?

I really appreciate your time figuring out answers to all these challenges, thanks SO much!

Paul

Stellarium doesn't support this feature right now but I'll look for improvement the feature of the single selection of the constellation.

I have not looked into the code on this, just a few suggestions:

Maybe it should work like this: In single mode, you can add constellations one-by-one with mouse click, so you can tell e.g. the stories around Andromeda with figures appearing one-by-one. 3 Keyboard keys switch art, lines and labels. If one of them is active, clicking with the mouse adds more constellations (like now). However, a Right-Click (already "unselect") should clear the list. In case of empty list, e.g. keyboard R (art) toggles "all" art images.

In case there is already an active list which is currently displayed (label/lines/art shown), clicking again on an already active constellation should toggle that clicked constellation. (To show just one: right-click to clear, immediately select your wanted one)

Just tried to activate one constellation. What is the current algorithm? Clicking onto e.g. 2 Dra selects "all". So I assume a single constellation is selected if the clicked star is in its line list. It may be better to click-activate with testing the constellation_boundaries (if available), and the line only if no boundaries are defined.

gzotti and Alexander,

Thanks for the replies. I did start practicing a method similar to what gzotti suggested. It works nicely to bring up one constellation (toggling ON the ART button), talking about it, turning it off (toggle OFF the ART button), then selecting another constellation and talking about it, and so on. As the story unfolds, the group of constellations grows giving the guests a full picture. It works well.

I did figure out something today by accident: after having a few constellations selected that would turn on and off with the ART button, I accidently selected the moon. Instead of all the constellations coming on, like when a non-constellation star is selected, nothing happened. I then un-selected the moon. When I selected another constellation star, only that constellation came on. SO, by selecting the moon (or a planet, or a deep-space object) and then un-selecting it, that cleared the list of constellations and started anew. I will be practicing with this method to see if I can do a one-at-a-time constellation story...and then select the group at the end to show all the constellations in the story. I think it can work.

Thanks for the help,

Paul L
