What do the different Bug levels mean? (Committed etc)

Asked by Peter Kordas

I have looked for a description of what the terms actually mean: Confirmed, Fix Committed, In Progress... I know what they look like they mean, but do they? "Confirmed" seems to imply "Yep, we got a problem there Houston, but we aren't doing anything about it.. just acknowledging it exists" "Fix Committed- seems to imply- Yep, Houston, stop nagging us. We'll get around to fixing the bug when we've finished our coffee, or playing Scrabble. But we're still not actually doing much except promise we'll get to it. Eventually. "In Progress" Yep, Houston, we've got the spanner out and busy tweaking. No idea when/if we'll finish this side of Christmas 2015.. or maybe 2018... or maybe whenever we can get to it after we finish the crossword.

What I would like to know is whether the bug is being worked on, and whether it has been fixed of still being swatted. I have looked around on the bug page and can find no reference to the meaning of the terms that would enlighten a casual observer (but not a bug-swatter) Peter, Guildford, Australia :)

Basically:
New: Nobody has looked at and reacted to the bug report yet.
Confirmed: Yes, we can reproduce it, thanks for reporting. Reporting it again is not necessary.
Invalid: The OP has misunderstood something and reported a valid feature as bug.
Won't Fix: Take this as feature, we are not interested.
Opinion: Thanks for writing to us (not a bug report.)
Wishlist: If we all had more time and would do this during daytime...
In Progress: Somebody is thinking about a solution and (has committed himself to, in a different meaning of the word!) actively working on a fix.
Fix Committed: It has been repaired in source code, and the next release will no longer be affected. "Commit" is the term used when source code is added to the online repository, it's not a "promise". Maybe this is confusing.

There are some confirmed bugs which are not technically critical (stop the program from working on 30% of all PCs or so) and depending on workload and existing spare time of the developers may be left open for longer than we all like. Feel free to help us!

Thanks for that explanation. And for clarifying "Commit" - I think that's where I was a little confused. I appreciate your efforts to clarify things for me. I'll go out and play now :)
