Wish For Windows Standard Min, Max and Close Icons

Asked by Dave Delete

Everyone I know who has used this program, and I know many, have complained and agonized over how to minimize, maximize or close the window as the program does not open in a standard way. There are no classic icons for performing these tasks , in the upper right hand corner of the window. I finally found that the way to trigger their appearance is to click on the that 'stretch box' icon , in the bottom toolbar. I heard a Function key will do it too. Why not have the program launch with this feature enabled ? Every other windows-based program does and we all want to be able to toggle between windows and programs. Thanks.

I don't understand your problem. Stellarium can work in two modes - fullscreen and windowed. In the fullscreen mode all control elements of the operating system is hidden and this mode used by default. In the windowed mode workspace of Stellarium is standard window in operating system with control elements of the operating system which has standard behaviour and look.

Of course we can set windowed mode by default for Windows but any users already can change this mode independently and this has been described in the Stellarium User Guide.

The problem is this: How many windows programs do you know that when they open, are missing the upper right sizing icons ? I know of only 1. Stellarium. I am in a class right now of astronomy students and no one could figure out how to toggle into other windows or programs, without shutting down the program, until we found it after quite a long search and experimentation. True we could search and find it in the users guide but shouldn't software be standardized ? We wouldn't have an Industrial or Information Revolution without standards. If we had to read and remember a user guide for every piece of software we used in life, we'd have time for nothing else. Cheers.

It's incredible! It's really amazing because for great number of people Stellarium's GUI was very clean and simple. OK, you write about standartization of software and I quote "I am in a class right now of astronomy students and no one could figure out how to toggle into other windows or programs, without shutting down the program, until we found it after quite a long search and experimentation". You and all students don't know about standartized Alt+Tab for switching between windows in Windows? My main operating system is Linux and this operating system doesn't use standartized look and behaviour for windows which used in Windows.

Are you want see windowed mode in Stellarium by default - I'm right?

Well for great number of people I know, when a Windows program opens up, we expect full Windows functionality. The Alt Tab function caused some users window to flicker. Listen ... I don't like your tone. I'm trying to submit suggestions and you are coming across as .... well I won't say it. Goodbye and good luck.

Yeah, in my humble opinion you are suggested enable the forced windowed mode in Stellarium because you can't find and press one button on main toolbar. Charles, possible I bad man with bad tone but your tone is not very good too. Also maybe Stellarium has very difficult GUI, but what about standard F1 for getting help? I guess you doesn't press it. Are you read Stellarium User Guide? I guess - no.

Sorry, but for me your real problem is this: you can't find tool for switch Stellarium in classic window mode. Solution for that issue is very easy - press F11, next press F2 and press button "Save settings".

You write "The Alt Tab function caused some users window to flicker." - possible it related with this bug - https://bugs.launchpad.net/stellarium/+bug/550337 I can't reproduce this issue but maybe you can give info for it?

Dave, re you really in a class - a science class no less - and can't be bothered to read a user manual? My god man, do you even bother then to read your text books?

Grow up and learn a thing or two.

Comments like this one add nothing. Please don't do that again.

The user manual would be more useful to our users if it was easier to find, easier to navigate and more complete. Now, why some people won't use the internal help or don't notice the function description tips appearing over the default buttons is another question...

As for the original complaint, some information for those who may come upon this discussion:

There is a large class of desktop applications that start in full-screen mode and don't have the standard keys for window management - computer games, especially those that use 3D graphics. Stellarium has a lot more in common with Quake than with Microsoft Word. :)

Stellarium can be toggled between full-screen and windowed mode with a button on the bottom button bar. There's also a keyboard shortcut, with default key F11. If you click on the "Save settings" button in the Configuration window while Stellarium is in windowed mode, it will remember the its state and it will start in windowed mode the next time.

Full-screen behavior is saved in Stellarium's configuration file, so if you are in a classroom environment, you can ask your system administrator to deploy a standard copy of the configuration file to all computers, thus making sure that everyone has the same starting settings.

The main configuration file - config.ini - is a "plain text" file which can be edited with any text editor such as Notepad. It can be found in the user data directory (see http://www.stellarium.org/doc/0.12.4/fileStructure.html ), and on Windows, it's also accessible from a shortcut in Stellarium's folder in the Start menu.

In the configuration file, the full-screen key is in the "[video]" section. If "fullscreen" is set to "false", the values of "screen_h" and "screen_w" determine the height and the width of the window (in pixels) on startup.

I hope that this is useful to whoever find this Question.
