need to brighten program displays and boxes

i run program and the night sky and hole program displays are too dark. the night sky is so dark i can only make out basic things.
the windows boxes engaged by the "F" keys are unreadable i have to turnoff al the lights in the room to see. I've tried turning up and down my monitor brightnesses and windows brightnesses and colors but can't read the info properly.
I have windows professional 7 on the desk top. On my Lap top i'm running windows 7 Home Premium. it views perfectly.
 I am running 12.4 on bothe computers.

Can you give me any instruction?

Possible your monitor is not calibrated. Can you change gamma for test?
