First-time user with error launching Stellarium

Asked by Jay Aber

Since I'm a first-time user of Stellarium I decided to seek help here before filling out a bug report. I just installed Stellarium 0.12.2 AND the one available bug fix 0.12.2.u1 that I just found. I'm trying to launch Stellarium for the very first time and I get an immediate fatal error Event ID 1000. Faulting module name is msvcrt.dll v. 7.0.7601.17744. Exception Code 0xc0000005. I can provide a snapshot from the Event Viewer log if that will help. I'm running Windows7 Home Premium x64, fully patched. Needless to say Stellarium never launches. Any suggestions / feedback on how to troubleshoot this problem would be greatly appreciated.

Are you install 0.12.2 + 0.12.2u1?

First I installed 0.12.2 by itself. When I got the fatal error I found and install 0.12.2.u1 on top of the original install. Still getting the error though.

It's very strange. Can you show latest run log if it exist?

No run log exists yet because I've been unable to run it successfully. I'm an I.T. guy so I keep my machines well tuned. This is the only app I've had issues with to date on this build.

Alexander, I usually stick to the most stable base but at your suggestion I completely uninstalled 0.12.2 and gave 0.12.3dev3 a try. Sure enough - it's working now!

Sorry I took up your time with this but I'm a past developer and don't usually try the "bleeding edge" betas unless I'm participating in testing. In this case it might have saved us both some time. Anyway, thanks for your support, and for helping to develop this interesting and fun piece of software!
