Cannot install Stellarium 0.11 or 0.12 on Mac Mini 1.66 GHz Intel Core Duo, OS X 10.6.8, while 010.6. works

Asked by Dr.O.M. Betz

I have been using different versions of Stellarium on Macintosh systems for a couple of years now, latest installed versions were 0.10.6 on a Mac Mini 1.66 MHz Intel Core Duo with OS X 10.6.8 (and equally on a G4 iBook, OS X 10.4.11). I learned about new versions lately and downloaded Stellarium 0.12.0 because the website said it worked with 10.6.x. But trying to install it - no way, there was a no-go-sign already on the application symbol after I opened the .dmg file. I downloaded 0.11.4 and tried to install this, same problem. For a laugh, I downloaded 0.10.6, opened the .dmg and voilà: Installation possible. But this was not of great help as I wanted to get a newer version because the solar system editor had crashed when I tried to install Panstarr and Lemmon... on my wife's laptop, BTW, no problem installing Stellarium (64-bit version for Windows 7) and using the solar system editor. And I so wished I could have the same version on my Mini! Any chance for 0.12? If required, I can send in screenshots of the problem steps.

Thank you!

Since version 0.11.4 Stellarium for Mac OS X built only for 64-bit Intel CPU's. I think you have 32-bit CPU.

Latest version, which you can build from source code and run on G4 iBook is 0.11.4 (after apply small patches or if you disable Observability analysis plugin). Version 0.12 can work only on IntelMac's (you can build it from source code). Instructions for building you can found on our wiki.

Thank you for this lighning-fast response - I think the 32-bit issue is the heart of the problem, I couldn't find any specific hardware requirements on the downloading site. I can't verify right now - I have to go out to a good viewing position for Panstarrs as we have a clear sky here and I'm afraid the weather will be worse tomorrow. As for building my own versions of Stellarium, this will not happen too soon; maybe it's written in the stars, who knows...
Kind regards, OM
