star selection for alignment

Asked by Peter K Rallis

Except for a few stars when I click on one to do alignment or sync the program always brings up a near by nebula and it seems the only way to actually select the star is to zoom in. Am I doing something wrong? is there a way to select the star and not the nearby nebula?

Thank you,

You can switch nebula off. Use the Nebula button in the lower bar or shortcut key N.

Turning nebulae off does not solve this problem. Trying to do a goto to stars for alignment or sync still centers on nearby nebulae even when nebulae are turned off with very few exceptions unless you do an extreme zoom in to the star. This is a minor nuisance but it would be nice if the program reported the the star pointed at instead of a nearby nebula.

When you are clicking on the screen, the position undergoes a correction for refraction (if atmosphere is switched on), then objects are searched in the unrefracted celestial coordinates. The "inverse refraction" computation applied to the target point is a good approximate computation from the same source as the "forward refraction", but no inverse function in the mathematical sense. In dense star fields close to the horizon you may be more successful "hitting" your star if you click slightly above or below it (try it).

Suggestion: switch off atmosphere distortion, then only the accuracy of your mouse click may interfere. Higher than maybe 5 degrees, the difference should be absolutely negligible, and it is reasonably small below that. For GOTOs, your target star should be well above that.

Thank you for the reply. My problem was actually solved when a member of Astronomy Shed suggested that I just use the "n" key to toggle Nebula off when doing alignment.

As an aside, I had tried offsetting where I clicked but it seldom worked, it mostly gave me data on another DSO. Toggleing off Nebula works everytime. I guess I should have looked at the Help file a little closer.
