Can I use Stellarium with a fish eye lens? Do I have to use other software to correct for distortion in the fisheye lens?

Asked by Malcolm Lee

Does the stellarium software work directly with a projector with a fisheye lens?

The ouput of the lens has small pixels in the middle, and bit pixels on the edge. It is possible to use software to manipulate graphics to compensate for this effect, but does stellarium have a way of dealing with that already?

Hope this makes sense,

Malcolm

Hi Malcolm,

Stellarium is designed to work with fisheye lenses for small planetarium projectors. Just open the View dialog (F4), go to the Markings tab and look at the bottom. There's a "fisheye" projection mode there which you can select.

The expect orientation for your projector is with the lens pointing at the zenith (i.e. upwards). If you should zoom out and point at the zenith in the program, the horizon should be projected around the room at lens level (assuming the lens is capable of near 180 degree projection).

The "TUI" (text user interface) plugin is designed to enable you to control the program with simple text menus which should be convenient less intrusive than dialog boxes for turning various options on and off. Enable the TUI plugin from the plugins tab of the config dialog (F2). You'll need to re-start Stellarium after enabling it. Then press the "m" key to turn it on.

I hope that helps
M
