How do I identify my location

Asked by Larry Gaitley

Based on a recent news article in my local paper, I installed Stellium. It looks promising but I want to change the location from the apparent default of somewhere in France to my actual location in Asheville, NC. I have tried to enter the correct latitude and longitude coordinances (using F6) to handle this but the "ADD TO LIST" tab on the screen is greyed out so the system will not allow me to make this change. What do I have to do in order to get Stellarium to show the skyline above where I live?" I really don't care what it looks like in France .for Stellarium

Hi Larry,

Thanks for giving Stellarium a try. First thing to note is that unless you're using Stellarium to drive a telescope, you don't need to be super-precise with the location. For binoculars or naked eye observing I would recommend finding the closest city which is actually in the Stellarium location database and using that. After a quick look at google maps I found Spartanburg which should be close enough to you for most purposes.

Having said that, I'm sure you would prefer to have your actual location listed. Before I can suggest a solution though, I need a little more information. This can be found in the log file. Please would you do the following:

1. Start Stellarium
2. Open the location dialog
3. Try to add your location again
4. Close the location window
5. Open the help dialog, and go to the log tab
6. Copy the log text and paste it here (or attach the log file)

From this I hope to gather some more information which can help me diagnose the problem.

P.S. could you tell me the name of the paper - I'd love to find a copy of the article online if I can, and see what they said about us.

M

Thanks Matthew. Being a free sight as you are, I really did not expect to
receive any answer to my question--- let alone one this quickly. That
said, I tried following your steps. I got through Step #4 (Close the
location window) where I have gotten into all my previous problems. I
cannot get to Step #5, Is there any possibility that you can call me at
828-891-3608 to walk me through this process. I know it will be a one-time
thing but, if I can get my local area identified, I would love to have your
website online.

P.S. I read about this in our local newspaper --- the Asheville
Citizen-Times.

Although I am extremely fascinated by the stars, I do not have a telescope
and merely want to identify the bright stars and/or planets I am seeing in
my night sky.

Sorry, no phone support. One of the reasons for the public questions site is that others can view and benefit from answers provided here and so [hopefully] we don't have to answer the same question too many times. But... here's some more info which might be helpful:

4. Just hit the ESC key to close any open dialog
5. Press F1 to open the help dialog, and click the "log" icon

I am disappointed that Stellarium will not allow a phone call. This could
probably resolve this problem in a minute. I tried (many times) to use the
"ESC" tab to get out of your program but it did not work. I found that I
had to use the last icon at the bottom of the screen (looks like a "power"
button) in order to to exit your site. I tried following your suggested
last steps and Step #2 actually took me to the Hewlitt -Packard Helpdesk
but they had absolutely no idea what your website was. As much as I would
like to place this on my desktop, I am afraid that, without a one-to-one-
phone conversation, I will just have to forget about this., It is rather
frustrating to know that as much that I like your site, when I insert my
actual latitude and longitude concordances, the "Add to List" is greyed out
and therefore will not allow me to update to show me what the star sky is
above me.

Larry,
After you enter your coordinates, you have to hit [Enter key], the "Add to list button" will become activated.

I have also listed some alternative ways to save your location here:

https://sites.google.com/site/stellariumuserguide/

All this is applicable to Stellarium 0.11.1

Stellarium is an open source, community supported project. We are not a business. Nobody is paid to work on the project. We are hobbyists. There are only a handful of contributers. We do not make phone calls to individuals. We don't even call one another - the entire project is done using the net.

Anyways, the ESC key does not close the program - it closes open dialogs. The toolbar button you found closes the program. You can also press control-Q on Windows and Linux machines, or command-Q on Macs to close the program.

BUT, please don't close the program. All the instructions I gave were to be performed _within Stellarium_. Do you understand the difference between closing the location dialog in Stellarium and closing the program?

Can you help with this problem?
