Stellarium on OS X doesn't "start" CGEM

Asked by Gary Palmer

When I try to configure Stellarium to recognize my Celestron CGEM mount over a USB to RS232 serial port, a telescope shows up in the yellow first line as #1, Stopped, type local, but the start button produces no result. The telescope is connected and turned on. CNTR-1, ALT-1, and COM-1 produce no slewing. The configuration window shows it controlled directly through a serial port, or at least that radio button is highlighted. What now? Is the CGEM supported?

OS X 10.6.7

What version of Stellarium you used? And what version of firmware installed into CGEM mount?

The CGEM series are NexStar compatible, so it is supposed to be supported by Stellarium.

The most common problem with using Stellarium for telescope control on a Mac is entering the wrong serial port name.
The second most common problem is the serial-to-usb adapter or its drivers.

Here's a thread in an astronomy forum where a user describes his problems and the solution:

The referenced thread looks like excellent information. I will try it at my first opportunity and report back. I note that my dev list has nothing like the port described in the directions, but I will try ttys1. Alexander's question is answered below. Thanks much to both Bogdan and Alexander.

iMac Intel
OS X 10.6.7
Stellarium for OS X, 0.10.6
Firmware GEM MC 4.16 HC 6.08, 6.08

I attempted to follow the directions at http://stargazerslounge.com/beginners-help-advice/117787-using-stellarium-control-your-mount-mac-solution.html. The directions say:

"Firstly I am using a generic USB to Serial adapter (brought from Maplins) with a drive downloaded from Prolific (Welcome to Prolific.com) - PL2303 Driver for Mac."

I installed PL2303. System Preferences presented me with a configuration window which showed the new serial device, but I remain "Not configured" in the dialog. Should I be looking for an address? None is listed for the serial port in Network Utility, where it shows up as "usbserial" and "Disconnected".

"3. Under ‘Device settings’ you then need to tell Stellarium what and where the serial port is. At present the box will display /dev/."

I can't find a box or selection button called 'Device settings' other than the informational one in the help contents.

"To fill in the correct information go need to go to terminal and type cd /devfollowed by the return key then type ls this will list all the devices contained on your system."

My list is found with cd /dev. I find no /devfollowed with locate.

"You are looking for something along the lines of cu.usbserial make sure to copy the cu.xxxxxxxxx and not the tty.xxxxxxxxx into Stellarium and paste it after the /dev/ so you will end up with something like /dev/cu.usbserial"

/dev/cu.usbserial now exists. It did not before the installation of PL2303. But I have nowhere to paste it.

"4. Under ‘Device model’ choose ‘Celestron NexStar (compatible)’ This will allow control over Sywatcher mounts."

I don't find a category 'Device Model'.

So that's where I am now, looking for Device Settings and Device Model.

What kind of USB-to-serial/serial-to-USB adapter are you using? Does it have a manual or other instructions coming with it? Perhaps it's a good time to read them...

The "device model" and "serial port" fields are in the "Add new telescope"/"Configure telescope" window. You should have seen them when you tried to add your telescope.

"/devfollowed" is a typo - a space is missing. It should read "...go to terminal and type cd /dev followed by the return key...".

Thank you for clarifying the /devfollowed business.

I'm using an iDotConnect USB-Serial Cable that I purchased at Fry's. There are no instructions with it. I followed a suggestion in the discussion on the Stargazer's Lounge forum (see previous URL) and installed Equinox Pro, which worked immediately and enabled me to slew the scope remotely, so I concluded that the cable was not the problem, but I know nothing about electronics, so I remain open minded. I would still like to get Stellarium running, as I like the graphics.

Close scrutiny of the CMD-0 window, the "Configure" window, and the "Add" window reveals no fields labeled "device model" or "serial port", nor anything that could be so construed. I would include screen clips, but there seems to be no provision for that on this forum.

Now I check that for about the 10th time. This time is different. With CMD-0 --> Configure, I see a panel with the label "Connection Settings" partially obscured. There are two fields labeled "Host" and "TCP port". When I click on the window, the panel disappears. I open the window again and click in the "Host" field. It seems inactive. The "TCP port" seems to want a number as it shows 10000. I don't know what to do with this. Now I click on the scrolling panel on the right. This produces the panel labeled "Device Settings" with a field containing /dev/. I click on this field, but it is inactive. I return to the browser window to write this and then return to the "Configure" window. The field has disappeared and the the scroll bars slide, but have no effect on the window contents. I close the window and reopen it and experiment with the scroll bars until I have the "Device Settings" panel again. I am able to enter /DEV/cu.usbserial. The "Device Model" panel shows "Celestron NexStar (compatible)" so I leave that in effect. I select "OK". I am returned to the CMD-0 "Telescopes" window. I click on "Start". It shows that #1, the only one in the list, is connected. Progress! I try CTL-1, OPT-1, COM-1, CTL-SHIFT-1, ..., nothing happens. I check to ensure that the mount is connected and turned on. I use the hand control to set it to previous alignment. Slewing does not occur. I go now to find a quiet place with a cup of tea and consider my errors.

To the previous, I should add the fact that I had set time and place in Stellarium and selected a star before attempting to slew the scope to the star.

Can you help with this problem?
