Landscape elevations possible?

Asked by Dale Mullen

A number of years ago I owned an astronomy application for the Mac which permitted the user to draw in a landscape outline (presumably a landscape which corresponded to the surroundings in the user's viewing area). Is it possible to do such a thing in Stellarium?

Thanks,
Dale

Yes, it possible. Details in User Manual - http://downloads.sourceforge.net/stellarium/stellarium_user_guide-0.10.2-1.pdf - Section "5.7 Customising Landscapes"

It is possible to create a custom landscape for Stellarium in several ways, but all of them require photography. You can refer to the Stellarium user guide *and* to the Stellarium Wiki:
http://www.stellarium.org/wiki/index.php/Landscapes
Creating a landscape typically involves "stitching" images together, though an ingenious user once created a single-image fish-eye landscape using a homemade fish-eye lens (taken from a door peep hole).

The "outline" thing where the user can create a custom horizon line by listing pairs of azimuth/elevation above the horizon, is not supported by Stellarium, though a blueprint has been drafted:
https://blueprints.launchpad.net/stellarium/+spec/landscape-custom-horizon
(Skychart/Cartes du Ciel supports it: http://www.ap-i.net/skychart/ )

Thanks to all who replied.
The methodology is actually much more sophisticated than I had hoped. I don't require/desire an actual landscape image but rather a mere outline to suggest the horizontal plain of what I'm able to observe locally in each of the four general directions.
The "outline thing" suggested by Bogdan is likely much more apropos to what I would like to have available in Stellarium, as actual pictures would serve little or no value at this point (for me).
Perhaps I'll merely wait to see if this feature shows up in later incarnations of this application.
Again thanks,
Dale

Actually my typing is somewhat faster than my brain. That should be 'plane' not 'plain.'

Well, the feature showed up with V0.13.0. :-) You must still configure a file with azimuth/altitude. See Geneve landscape. Details on the wiki.

Can you help with this problem?
