are updates required

Asked by tony newman

whilst watching 'Stargazing Live' BBC2 3.1.2011, I followed the star views on Stellarium. The position of the four moons of Jupiter shown live on the tv screen ( from a UK location), were in a very different alignment to that shown on Stellarium. My question is whether there are updates available to correctly position of the sky. The tv programme looked due south for Jupiter, whilst the Stellarium WSW. Your advice / opinion would be welcome.

The difference is due to the travel time of light. Stellarium can simulate this, although by default this is turned off.

Go to the view dialog (F4) -> sky tab -> simulate light speed [check this]

This should give you the correct positions. I think we will change the default setting in future to turn this option on.
