Can't download Star Catalogs

Asked by Martijn Biemans

After trying multiple times i haven't been able to download the star catalogs in Stellarium 0.10.5.
The problem is that after some time the program gives me the message: Socket Operation Timed Out.
I've already tried in administrator mode but that doesn't work either.
Please help...

Do you connect to the Internet through a proxy server?

I am connected to the internet by cable modem and a D-link dir 655 router. I am not aware of any proxyservers...

I'm sorry about the delay.

You can try downloading the catalogs manually from SourceForge:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/stellarium/files/Extra-data-files/
(Note: the last two ones are rather big and some on some systems Stellarium can't load them. Try stars4 first.)

Please tell me what operating system do you use so that I can tell you where to put the files.

No problem, thanks for your help.

I'm running on Windows Vista 64-bit.

You need to find Stellarium's user data directory. On Windows Vista, it should be something like:

C:\Users\YOURUSERNAME\AppData\Roaming\Stellarium

Where YOURUSERNAME is, of course, your user name.

Inside that directory, there should be a "stars" directory, and inside the "stars" directory, a "default" directory. If these directories don't exist, create them. Then just put the downloaded star catalogs in the "default" directory and start Stellarium. The first load may be a little longer than usual as Stellarium will verify the integrity of the files.
