Polaris double star

Asked by Giorgio

Polaris is a double (may be triple) star, but I don't see double label that identify it like double star (and there's no way to resolve it). It is a missing data? Thank's.

I think that the companion(s) are not in the catalogue. Try searching for "Polaris B" and wait for a few seconds. You'll get a suggestion in ALL CAPS from the SIMBAD on-line search, but if you zoom in on it, there nothing there.

Bodgan,
many thank's for your precious suggestion (and your great job on Stellarium)! Polaris is one of the most important star in sky and I think that the failure to report it like double star is an important lacuna (Polaris B has a mag. 9.1). Hubble has found also the third companion Polaris Ab.
Thank's again.

The bright star catalog is taken from the Hipparcos mission, and so if a star is not there it will not appear in the default catalogs. Dimmer stars are available with the extra catalogs, and these are from various sources, including NOMAD. If the stars you refer to are not present there then you're entering tricky territory to add them.

SIMBAD searches just give coordinates for some name... which Stellaruim will slew to... but there is not necessarily an object in Stellarium's internal catalogs for a match found in SIMBAD.
