Can we purchase CDs of Stellarium to sell at our astronomy club?

Asked by Jean Napp

I am president of the Starsplitters of Wyalusing, a small astronomy club at a state park in Wisconsin. We offer programs to the public twice a month, May through October, as well as other programs to groups who ask. I would love to be able to offer the people a CD with Stellarium on it and, perhaps, add a small amount to the cost to help us pay our electricity, insurance, and other bills. Is anything like this available?

Thanks,
Jean

Stellarium is released as GNU General Public License (GPL) software, which means you are free to make and distribute as many copies as you like. The GPL also allows you to charge a fee for what you distribute. If you are not making any modifications to the software, there is nothing more for you to do. A complete copy of the GPL v2 is included with your install of Stellarium (see 'GPL.rtf' in the program directory) or you can view online at http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl.html.

I don't believe the authors have any official method of donating money to the project, but I do recall seeing mention of donating to Green Peace (Fabien - please correct me if this is wrong). Otherwise, I'm sure they'll appreciate the extra users of their fabulous product.

Hi,

As pedemoz pointed out, the license of Stellarium means you can burn your own CDs and hand them out without needing to pay us anything, and it is also true that you can even charge a reasonable distribution fee to people for this, although you must also provide the source code if requested.

If you want to give us money, we're happy to take it. We actually have a paypal account which is to be used by the Stellarium Association (a non-profit association registered in France). You can make a donation here:

http://sourceforge.net/donate/index.php?group_id=48857

This money goes to things like books for research, and computer hardware like a hard disk we had posted with NOMAD data on it. We may at some point use this money to help fund another developers meeting, or perhaps some hosting if we need it.

Also, links to our website from yours are a very welcome way to support the project.

Can you help with this problem?
