Star Names Translation

How can I translate star names to Arabic?
I was successful in downloading the .po files for stellarium and sky cultures. They include planet names, constellations names and messages but star names in the star_names.fab file in the sky culture western folder are not included. Same when using https://translations.launchpad.net/stellarium, no star names are included.

The star names I wish to translate are mostly the ones in star_names.fab

Star names are not included in the translation effort - they are not added to the .pot translation template and are not accessible through Launchpad's translation utilities. One of the reasons for this is the large number of star names.

The only way to translate star names is to edit the star_names.fab file. But such a translation won't be a part of Stellarium's official releases, at least for now. If you want, you can create a patch and distribute it independently.

Thanks for the clarification. I tried your sugesstion to edit the star_names.fab file directly but the Arabic characters are not recognized and stellarium will display them as question marks.

The original file appears to be ANSI/ASCII encoded. Have you tried to save it in some Unicode encoding, for example UTF-8?

If your text editor does not allow you to change the encoding, you can use Notepad++ (it is free):
http://notepad-plus.sourceforge.net
(In the original file, from the "Format" menu choose "Convert to UTF-8" and save the file, then make your changes.)

The star_names.fab wasn't really created with translation in mind. :(

I don't know how to thank you. It worked. I even now can search for the star name in arabic. Great help and prompt response.
