Broken usplah black screen

Asked by Eikichi

Hi there,

 I recently installed SUM to be able to easily change my GRUB background and usplash theme. More specifically I downloaded the usplash-theme-fingerprint.so and I set the resolution to 1024x768. After rebooting I was unable to boot into Ubuntu 7.10, I was getting a black screen with no login session etc.

I was only able to boot into recovery, from there I tried all the other resolutions, only the 640x480 with 8bit color worked, sort of. And that is because I still didn't get a splash screen, but after a 20 or so seconds on the black screen it takes me to the login screen. So I thought uninstalling the figerprint theme will solve the problem but it didn't. Even though I use the ubuntu usplash theme it does the same thing. Only difference now is that I get a flashing cursor on the top left corner of the black screen.

My specs are:
CPU = C2D E6600 @ 2.4GHz
Mobo = Gigabyte P965-DS4
VGA = 8800GTX
Mem = DDR2 PC6400 2x1GBs @ 800MHz

Do bare in mind that I am new to linux. Prior to SUM installation everything worked fine. Another thing that might have gone bad is the installation of the nvidia drivers, but i doubt it since I just installed the ones in Synaptic Manager.

Kind regards,
Eikichi

Try to copy the file saved as /boot/grub/menu.lst.backup back to /boot/grub/menu.lst
