Open SUSE Leap 42.1 Nothing provides stratagus = 2.2.7 needed by stargus-2.2.7-1.1.x86_64

Asked by Todd

Open SUSE Leap 42.1

Stratagus 2.3.0-4.1

Attempting to install Stargus from here

Results in error

Nothing provides stratagus = 2.2.7 needed by stargus-2.2.7-1.1.x86_64

Obviously because the newer Stratagus 2.3.0-4.1 is now in the repositories but Stargus is too dumb to know that.

Stargus hasn't been touched for years. Everyone is working on Wargus/Stratagus atm. One day we might start working on Stargus.

Strange priorities. All Wargus does is run some never-heard-of "Aleona's Tales" game while Stargus is intended to run one of the most popular games in history. But, hey, it's your free time to do what you want with.

Because Stratagus (when it was Freecraft) was originally intended to be a clone of Warcraft 2 (the Aleona's Tales game you mentioned). When Freecraft was closed (Blizzard's cease-and-desist letter), its engine reformed into Stratagus to run Warcraft 2 itself by means of extracting game data from CD, so it would be completely legal. This is the time Stargus was formed (we have Warcraft 2 - Wargus, so why don't have Starcraft - Stargus?). But the problem is that Starcraft has more advanced engine than Warcraft 2 has, and no one have completely rewritten the code (the correct way of doing things), so Stargus is merely a hack on top of Warcraft 2 capable engine. In 2007 the original Stratagus team has abandoned the development to work on Bos Wars. After that no one have done any kind of major work on Stargus. That's why it remains in it's current state - without complete engine refactoring it's a dead duck.

Can you help with this problem?
