Update fails after Relaunch

We have an issue on 10.6.1 where the update is detected it downloads and asks for you to install and relaunch.
At this point the update starts but never ends without a force quit, and the update is not completed.

We have other programs which update perfectly on the same machines.
This is 100% repeatable.

Any advise appreciated.

Nothing that helps:

The application does indeed update, but it just does not exit cleanly. A force quite is required.

File attached in case it helps but we are baffled.

Have you tried getting a sample while the app doesn't relaunch?

I'm seeing this behavior in Clarke ("http://tomtaylor.co.uk/projects/clarke/") and Adium ("http://adium.im/beta/") as well, also on 10.6.1. Is there any end-user fix available, outside of force-quitting the "updating" app?
