Where does Sparkle store the temporary download?

Asked by Lascurettes

I'm an end user that recently installed an update (Growl 1.2) that mounted a .dmg with some .pkg installers on it. I needed to re-install one of the extras after unmounting the .dmg. I could not for the life of me figure out where temporary files directory or equivalent would be with the growl-1.2.dmg would be.

Where does Sparkle store these files during updated if I ever want to grab one for archival purposes?

Those are stored in a temporary folder which will later be cleaned up—it's kept simple, I'm afraid. You can always re-download the relevant archive from http://growl.info/.

yes, I did exactly that, re-downloaded the growl archive directly.

I was just wondering for future reference, while a .dmg is still mounted for example, where is that source .dmg file stored? In the case of .dmgs with built in uninstallers as well as optional extras, it would be nice to know where to grab them from before they are deleted.

Additionally, you say they are in a temporary folder "which will later be cleaned up." Does this mean as soon as installation is done, or as soon as I manually eject the .dmg if Sparkle doesn't do it first?

It's stored somewhere in /tmp and is cleaned up when the system feels like it—usually within a couple hours. You can find out where the .dmg is while it's still mounted by running "df" in a terminal.
