Why is an FTP password not required?

Asked by WilliamSmith

Our application runs on Windows and Mac.
The updates for both are stored on our server.
Access is password protected for ftp access.
On the windows side out Auto Update is done via an FTP utility. The web site password just got changed and it broke our Windows update.
But our Mac Sparkle update is fine. It got me wondering, how is it that Sparkle can access files without a password. Does it use port 80 just like regular page html display?
Thanks.

Sparkle uses HTTP or HTTPS for file transfer, not FTP, so that would explain it.
