Ok, downloaded Sparkle. Now what? DOes this run in the background? Do I have to keep it open all the time? Feeling a bit moronic right now.

Sorry for the confusion. Sparkle won't do anything for you directly as a user: it's a component which software developers can add to their own products to deliver updates to their users.
