mp3 to m4a

Asked by william kim

ok, i have been looking for a ubuntu program that will convert mp3 TO m4a NOT m4a to mp3. i need this because one of my wireless devices uses m4a files. and only that. the deal is, i have heard sound converter can do this, but i downloaded it can do this but i found no m4a option in the conversions menu. i then went to ubuntu forums to ask why. as it turns out, i need sa special codec. so, i was just wondering, where the heck do i get this codec?

The codec you need is the FAAC (free advanced audio encoder) plugin for GStreamer. It's in the package gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad-multiverse; you can install the package through the Synaptic Package Manager, or in a terminal with the command:

sudo apt-get install gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad-multiverse

After that M4A (or AAC) should appear as an option in Sound Converter.

For Fedora:

# yum install gstreamer gstreamer-ffmpeg gstreamer-plugins-bad gstreamer-plugins-bad-free gstreamer-plugins-bad-free-extras gstreamer-plugins-bad-nonfree gstreamer-plugins-base gstreamer-plugins-good gstreamer-plugins-ugly faad2 faac libdca wget compat-libstdc++-33 compat-libstdc++-296 xine-lib-extras-freeworld
