Error message: The package system is broken

Asked by Pat Hussain

When I try to install LibreOffice-base, there are "unmet dependencies." I am unable to uninstall it or effect a repair "because there is a problem with the software currently installed." I have no idea what to do next

The following packages have unmet dependencies:

Earlier output suggested I run apt-get autoremove.
The results:

You might want to run 'apt-get -f install' to correct these.

I have tried removing and reinstalling Libre Office with no success. The, apt-get remove -f, worked.
the installation ended with this message:

I am using Unbuntu 14.04. But I found a posting for Unbuntu 13.10 that resolved the error message:
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

I ran:
sudo apt-get remove install-info

Next to clear apt archives:
sudo apt-get clean

Then:
sudo apt-get update

The last step was:
sudo apt-get upgrade

If the last step doesn't work, try -f:
sudo apt-get upgrade -f.

Thanks for your help in resolving this problem!
