Will the paid-for apps be localised?

Asked by Redmar

I have two seperate questions about the paid-for apps in the software-center.

First: Where can we translate the descriptions of these apps? For normal packages these are taken from the app-install-data and ddtp packages. If they cannot be translated now, will this be made possible in the future?

Second: Will the paid-for apps themselves be translatable? Again, most 'normal' packages can be translated, and usually the software center shows a link to their webpage where you can find out how to contribute.
Translating the apps themselves is a lot more work of course, so I have no idea how many people would be willing to do that, but I'm curious about the possibilities.

Thanks

According to me : paid-for apps will be translated by its developer since they are not FOSS (and hence cannot be hosted on launchpad)

I don´t know witch package exactly you are talking about, but maybe on the package home page you can find options (instructions) for translation.Just a guess.

So the apps themselves wont be translatable through launchpad, but what about the descriptions shown in the software center?

Hi Redmar, it's actually the same problem for the descriptions themselves. Since the paid apps are not hosted in Launchpad, the burden is on the developer to provide their own translations for both the application and for the description that will appear in Software Center. For the developer, then, I would think this would be a business decision, that is, if they feel that translating is a worthwhile thing for them to do expand their potential market. As things stand now, however, there is no facility for community translations for the paid apps (even assuming volunteers would be willing to spend their time providing translations for non-FOSS software).

I hope that answers your question. Let me know if you need more info. Thanks!
Gary
