Over the past year or so we have developed and expanded a new facility for bringing applications into Ubuntu that does not require the traditional approach of bringing them into the official repositories. This facility is available to you (and to everyone), now, and you can find all the information that you should need here:

Note that, to answer your particular question, there is support for adding your own screenshots, as described on the "publish" page:

If I understand your goal correctly, I think this new facility should be exactly what you are looking for.
