Cannot boot from USB flash drive

Asked by Rudy Rubin

Loaded Sugar ona USB 2GB Flash Drive using Live USB Creator. The Flash drive does not boot up on a Vista Home Premium Service Pack 2 system running on a Sony VGN-CR series PC. If I use the helper CD, Sugar loads up OK. Is there another way to to configure the flash drive so it will boot up by itself?

Hi Rudy,

Can I just confirm that you're turning the computer off, inserting the USB and then turning the computer back on? Sugar on a Stick doesn't run on Windows, it's a seperate operating system.

When you restart the computer, you may need to enable bootup from USB via the BIOS settings. This is usually Esc. F2 or F12. You'll need to check the Sony documentation for instructions specific to your machine.

Let me know if you have any further issues :)

Hello Tim,
Thank you for your reply. I will try this and let you know how I made out. I think that when I pass this along to my friends, I just give them a mini CD with the helper disk. Noone is going to play around with the BIOS unless they have a techie back ground.
Continuing my saga with Sugar, I booted up Sugar with the helper CD and next tried to establish my network connection. I found the circle that represents my network and entered the 128 bit key. The circle flashed a while and brought up the window to enter the key again. What do I have to do to get Sugar online?
Regards, Rudy

Well I'm glad you're into sugar at least.

I'm not sure about how to do connectivity diagnostics, unfortunately. This may be a driver issue. If you're keen, look through some of the Fedora docs and go dig in the shell.

I'm sure someone with more knowledge will be able to provide more detailed advice. Best of luck.

Hi Rudy,

I agree about handing out a CD with the stick, then figuring out the BIOS can be an Easter Egg hunt :)

I've seen that bug too with locked wireless points but I never anywhere I could replicate it to put in a bug report on it. I'll point the dev team to this discussion so they know its an issue.

Thanks

Also my vision is we have middle and high school kids across the country creating funny, cute how to videos for various types of hardware. Here is one we did this summer.

Rudy, on second thoughts - could you please close this thread and start a new one about your connectivity issues.
