Thanks, I've sent that on to the developers, in a recent bug report:
http://bugs.sugarlabs.org/ticket/1779#comment:3

However, this is very unlikely to have anything to do with your other
symptoms "stick is ruined, must reformat and make a new one from iso
image with live USB creator." Does that symptom occur independently of
Speak activity Robot mode failing?

v14 should work, about "stick is ruined.." I didn't see original issue in gst-espeak but it's possible that gst-espeak are falling to infinite loop thus "stick is ruined.." is possible.

I've tested, and this particular problem is fixed in Speak-14.

Doesn't help you with your "stick is ruined", but thought I'd let you
know.

Ok, I haven't downloaded Speak-14 yet, but I have been able to
duplicate "stick ruined"

1. Open speak
2. Click robot
3. Type Cheshire question to Alice: "?"
4. Crash returns to home screen
5. Open speak again, thinks a long time, returns to home screen, no app opens.
6. Open speak *again*, thinks a long time, power off/on to reboot
7. Dead stick.

This is a Dell Latitude D600. A 1GB Sandisk Cruzer stick formated Fat32.

I'm guessing that there is some files being written at power-down and
the non-journaling filesystem loses it's inodes or whatever and takes
a long dump.

I'll try new software after work tonight if I can download just that one app.

Also, how do you get to the unix command-line? There *must* be a way
to do it, otherwise you will you ever teach the little kids how to be
real hackers??

A simple "du" might tell me what's going on underneath, though.

Thanks,

Brad

Could you describe what "Dead stick" means?

Control/Alt/F1? Terminal activity?

Dead stick is no longer bootable.

I finally got to the documentation, and found out about the risks of a small
stick, and the terminal activity, etc.

You can close this issue, sorry to waste any more of your time.
