simple scan suddenly stopped working

Running Mint, I don't see how to access the version but it is a few months old. Figuring an update had broken it, I checked to see if there was something newer with "apt-get install simple-scan" and got:
simple-scan is already the newest version (3.20.0-0ubuntu1).

I run Simple Scan about once a week and it has almost always worked well for me. Now it operates the scanner, cycling the scanning, but no longer gives the "working on it" indications or eventually present an image.

Thinking maybe my Canon USB CanoScan Lide25 was broken, I've installed and run XSane which seems to work normally but I haven't learned how to get the same results as I easily get from Simple Scan.
