Simple Scan

Brother MFC-440CN Scanner Issues

I downloaded the install tool and drivers from Brother. Cannot open Simple Scan normally... error: "Failed to Scan..Unable to connect to scanner". I can however open Simple Scan in ROOT and it works fine. Linux Mint 17, Compaq Presario Desktop SR1920NX. Newbie here with Linux so try not to get too technical with commands, etc. Please keep it simple.
