Simple Scan

Help make HP C6380 All-in-One Scan from HP HDX 16 Laptop using Linux.

Printer works fine when I want to make a copy from my laptop but when I want to scan another picture or paper the laptop does not find the printer/scanner. They both are HP products so it does not make sense to me. I have tried every conceivable way with no success. PS: the printer is directly plugged into the laptop's USB port.
