Can Sikuli run on background VTs?

I have a script that I would like to connect to an X server running on a non-foreground VT under Ubuntu Karmic. I can start the server from the console and run the script, manually specifying the proper X display. All is fine if I then switch VTs to the server in question. If I instead stay on the console, the script fails at the first find()... Any ideas what's going on?
