moving crosshairs with arrow keys

Asked by Marcus Rogge

Hi there!
First I want to thank you for this nice tool!
Wouldn't it be a useful feature to be able to move the crosshairs also with the key arrows, when making a selection? Or is this feature already available and I've just overseen it?

Good point, thanks. I've created a new bug report for this:

I have been longing for a full-featured, easy-to-use screenshot program for a long time, and it looks like I finally found it!

I fully agree that the ability to move the crosshairs with the arrow keys would make this program even better than it already is. Thanks for creating a bug report for this!

Hi all, did you ever got a look to Winsnap? it is a shareware program I usually use on Windows.
It has a very useful nice feature: when you are moving the crosshair with mouse or arrow keys the program shows a "zoom box" that enables you to take a pixel-accuracy screenshot. If the crosshair hovers the zoom box, it moves automatically away in order to not disrupt you when defining the screenshot area.
PS: sorry for bad explanation I don't know English very well.

I don't know Winsnap, but I think Shutter has already everything what you've described. Shutter does have two selection tools, see how to switch between the two modes:

The simple selection tool does provide a zoom window (it moves automatically as you've described).
The advanced selection does not provide a zoom window but (I think even better) you can zoom your whole screen in and out. See this screenshot for the relevant shortcuts:

Thank you, it is almost exactly what I was looking for.

I would like to have the little zoom box even in advanced mode, I feel that selection mode more handy, because zooming in and out might be clumsy on large selections.
About keyboard shortcuts I think that the selection mode by might be improved in order to have simpler shortcuts, I'll try to outline what I mean on the sequence below:

- the user activate the (advanced) selection mode
- the user can move the first selection corner by mouse and/or by arrow keys without using ctrl key
- the user fixes the first selection corner hitting enter or clicking the left mouse key
- the user can drag the second selection corner by mouse and/or arrow keys without pressing any mouse or ctrl key
- the user fixes the second selection corner by clicking by mouse or hitting the left mouse button

during these operatons the user should see the zoom box in order to enable a pixel-precision selection.

What do you think about?

Agreed, having the zoom box also be available in advanced selection would be
a boon.
