Is there a shortcut key to take a simple snapshot without opening the window

I would like to use a keyboard shortcut to activate a snapshot. Is there a way to do this? I have another program in Windows that allows me to just hit f6 and then I just pick the size and done. That way the program is just sitting in the task bar until I need it.

What desktop environment do you use (Gnome2, Gnome-Shell, Unity, KDE
etc.)?
