Is ubunto server a command-line OS?

Asked by hrmiraly

Hi,

Is ubuntu server a command-line OS? or we can use that on graphical interface like Ms-Windows server?

I tried to install on my laptop, after installation a command prompt lined-up?

what should I do? for setting network services like DHCP, DNS, and the other services?

How can start with this? are there any books or references to learning step by step ubunto server?
Thanks a lot.

Yes, server is command line only. There's nothing to stop you adding Ubuntu Desktop though, you can just install and configure it, just as there's nothing to stop you installing the desktop version and installing any server components that you need. Most server administrators prefer to have a system with no GUI overheads however, or run a very minimal GUI such as a desktop manager (ie fluxbox et al). As you're talking about a laptop, are you sure that the server installation is the most appropriate? Most people would put the desktop release on their laptops.

As a reference, most sources seem to recommend either the official Ubuntu server book:
http://www.informit.com/store/product.aspx?isbn=0137021186
or the Ubuntu Server Guide is available for free:
https://help.ubuntu.com/12.04/serverguide/index.html

The Ubuntu Server Guide might also be available in PDF format if you look around, and as always Google is your friend.
