What's changed in handling groups in schooltool 2008.10

Asked by Ronald van Engelen

Since the upgrade from 2008.4 to 2008.10 some things appear to have changed regarding to schooltools concept of groups.

Some examples end relating issues:

The `manage` button below the ''calendar list'' view doesn't display regular groups, only resources. How can we influence the display of overlayed calendars of team-members etc?

The `groups` management screen is transferred to the schoolyear. Does this mean that groups are equal to ''lesson groups'' for a particular school year and if so, how can we handle other groups (like teams)?

Thanks,
Ronald

The assumption is that in schools *most* groups remain fairly stable during a single school year, but change year to year. For example, the 9th grade group and the chess club group in 2008-2009 will be different than those groups in 2009-2010. We could just overwrite the old group membership, but in some cases we'd be losing useful data. You might want to know who was in the chess club in 2008-2009 (and in particular, you must know who attended what classes in 2008-2009). So the groups are organized and archived by school year.

Thanks Tom for your swift reply. I still have the following question:

How can we influence the display of overlayed calendars of team-members etc?

I'm not sure what you mean exactly. We will probably need to make it easier to hide calendars from groups and sections from previous years.

At the moment you can't do that, I have removed this feature when implementing school years, because it was pretty much impossible to reuse the old code for overlay selection. So at least at the moment group overlays are disabled completely. We will reimplement group and person calendar overlay selection in a different way as soon as we will have time for that.

Clearly I need to finish writing my budget, resume writing documentation, and see what SchoolTool actually looks like now that the sample data import works again.

Thanks Ignas Mikalajūnas, that solved my question.

Actually it didn't solve my question. Not having the basic functionality of selecting other calendars makes schooltool unusable for new users (existing users still see all selected calendars).

Should I file a bug or do you have a recipe for fixing it through python?

File it as a bug. It will take us a little time to get to it, unfortunately.
