exporting grade table with some specific fields

Asked by Francisco Cortes on 2016-07-12

Hi guys

I'm looking to give schooltool another try but I need to be able to generate an export of data 4 times a year to generate report cards for the four grading periods we have in a year:

Just bit of background: we use a third party app to generate report cards (unfortunately the report cards provided by schooltool, last time I checked, were not customizable enough to allow us to use it for our school) so I'm hoping to see if we can do the following:

I need to export a table that has the following fields (the field names below are just standard names, and don't have to be exact match on what schooltool provides as I can change those to import the table into my third party app used to generate the report cards ) :

studentID, gradingPeriod, subjectID, averageClassGrade

field explanation:

- studentID: the ID assigned to the student
- gradingPeriod: we have 4 periods in the year so this field should be a number from 1 to 4 basically
- subjectID: this is the id of the subject that is being graded
- averageClassGrade: this is a numeric value of averaging the scores of any assignment or labs that were graded for the grading period for a particular subject

I figure we can use some naming convention in schooltool to name some fields, like naming the subject like "<<subjectID - subjectName>>" so I can split subjectID and subjectName into 2 different fields after the export. This will allow me to get rid of the subjectName and use the subjectID in the "formatted" export to import it then into my third party report generator app.

Any chance I can get that export with those fields with schooltool?
or is there a way to tab into the database backend of schooltool and get that data out somehow? I'm familiar with sql but I understand that schooltool uses another dbms.

Thank you in advance.

Essentially, no. This would require a custom report written in Python. We have been writing some documentation on the subject, which you can find here: http://book.schooltool.org/report-sample.html

As you can see, it is not trivial for a new developer.

Hi Tom

tks for the follow up

how can I get a quote of how much it would cost to have this implemented for our school?

Hi Francisco,

I am afraid we are no longer doing SchoolTool customization. We'll be making a formal announcement soon once we have completed some conversations with other potential vendors for support.

Can you help with this problem?
