parents/contacts group

Asked by Richard Bychowski

Now that SchoolTool has the parent access feature, I am curious why parents/contacts is not a default group in SchoolTool? Can the parents authenticate against an LDAP directory the same as other users?

Let me rephrase the question. Based on the documentation here:

http://book.schooltool.org/contacts.html?#parent-access

The parent contact user is created through a form, and apparently the creation and linking process are simultaneous. What I need to know is if I can create parents as users in a contact group, and then link (or unlink) them to students as needed.

I'd investigate this myself, but we're having problems with authentication, and I'm trying to get that straightened out also.

Thanks!

Hi Richard,

Membership in the teacher or student default group does surprisingly little in SchoolTool (all the important permissions for students/teachers come from section membership), so yes, we could make a Contacts default group, but it would have no practical significance.

You could just make parent users and put them in a group you defined. The only real issue is that you would have to establish the contact relationship from the student's page, since the system assumes you're doing it that way (selecting the non-student from the student view rather than selecting a student from the non-student view).
