As with terms, years cannot overlap. A day can only be a part of one year.

What school year(s) do you currently have defined (including start and end dates)?
What term(s) do you currently have defined (including start and end dates)?
How do you need the terms to be (including start and end dates)?

If you need to have classes start and end at different times, you can set the start and end dates when you assign schedules to the classes. You cannot do this with terms that start and end at overlapping points. It might be easiest to simply define a single term for the whole year and schedule the sections individually.

The report card system is not dependent on the term structure. You can have one term defined for the year and a report sheet that has fields for multiple grading periods.
