how to upgrade from 2.63 to the latest version

i am really struggling to upgrade schooltool so can you please assist me with very simple steps as i am new with ubuntu at the moment i am running schooltool 2.63. do i need to back schooltool up to upgrade or will everything remain the same as in contacts, if i will need to back up please give instruction on this to thankyou

You need to switch to the 2.8 PPA and upgrade as explained here:

http://book.schooltool.org/install-2_0.html#schooltool-in-launchpad-net-personal-package-archives

It creates a backup of your database automatically when you upgrade. You shouldn't need to do anything else.
