edit PDF report template

Asked by David

Hi,
We are jsut starting out looking at Schooltool and we like what it does:) The first thing that we are trying to do is change the pdf reports that are created by the system. We would like to add in some spaces in the layout and also bold some of the writing. Could anyone point me to the pdf templates?

We will also be looking joining schooltool to moodle for user creation as well as course creation. Even if I have been able to find some talk about this I can not find any real information or anyone that has started or maybe even made such a plugin. Any ideas if such a plug in has been started?

Thanks for any help with the pdf templates.
Regards
David

Hi David,

Regarding reports, yes, documenting this part of the system is becoming a high priority, and we'll get back to you on that.

Regarding Moodle integration, there are a few custom implementations, but not a standard one, in part because Moodle's web services have been in flux over the years (although I suspect that's settled down a bit, at least I hope so), and in part because people tend to have different ideas about how they really want it to work. Do you know how you'd want the Moodle end to work?

Thanks for getting back to me! :)
The reports are the most important thing for us at the moment. Do you know what script is used to generate the pdfs? Or the location of the template files for the pdfs?

As for moodle we have been using it for about 4 years now and have it well integrated into our online system. If we use schooltool then we would only be interested in joining the two systems so that users can be created in moodle or schooltool and will automatically be generated in the other.

Thanks
David

Muchas gracias.

Atentamente desde Asuncion- Paraguay

Hi David,

I discussed the report situation with Douglas, our lead developer, today (he was on vacation last week).

The problem right now is that even though the report layout markup language is relatively straightforward -- similar to HTML -- the reports as currently written are extremely modularized. That is, each functional bit is in a different place, and the final template just plugs them all together. This is good for code reuse -- certain sections recur in multiple reports, and keeps each piece simple, but it is bad for just diving in and tweaking a few things in the final report.

On the other hand, as I said, making the most important reports more editable *is* a priority, so what we can do is essentially make a skeleton package that will have versions of the most important reports that are designed to be "all in one" and documented for editability. We are finishing the new release, and should be able to do the new reports in about a month.

Regarding Moodle, syncing in both directions is always *much* more difficult than going in one direction. Would you be able to settle on moving data in just one direction?

Hi,
Thanks for getting back to me again. I do understand what you are saying about the reports here. We are not in any hurry at the moment and I will wait and see what the next release will be like. We also have people here that could help out with coding once we are done with what they are working on now.

With moodle we would be ok if at least new users from Schooltool could me added to moodle. We do not need courses to be created from Schooltool or data imported from moodle to schooltools. At least not yet:)

Kind Regards
David

David,

Do you know by what mechanism you'd want Moodle to add the users? Web services?
