Sample.xls file details still reflecting in the new school setup after deleting it.

Asked by Tobi Alabi

I decided to import sample.xls file to aquint myself with schooltool platform and later deleted the 2 years data when i was done. I realize that when i was setting up a new school, some of the records of the previous sample data was still reflecting. what step do i need to take? also, is it not possible to manually delete the records in schooltool since the available option still keep records in its database and conflict them with new record when setting up new schools or am i doing something wrong?

How did you delete the old data?

If you want to start fresh, you should delete the database file entirely. See http://book.schooltool.org/database.html

I clicked on the link you gave and i tried accessing the schooltool folder to delete the database file but the message i got state [The folder contents could not be displayed. You do not have the permissions necessary to view the contents of "schooltool"]. what should i do? Need more information: I decided to import the sample data in schooltool to get aquinted with the platform; when i was done - i deleted the school years on schooltool. After deleting the school years i decided to start a new school and i realize that the following was still showing the default sample data of the previous years i deleted: people, contacts, groups, courses, resources, report sheet template...

i just upgraded from schooltool 2.1 to 2.6. I didn't experience such issue when i was working with schooltool 2.1.

You need to have root access to delete the database. You can, for example, do "sudo -s" in the terminal to give your terminal session root access.

Just deleting the years does not delete all the data in the database.

Thanks Tom; I tried the root access and i still couldn't delete Data.fs. what i meant was that the sample data for the 2years that is available on schooltool is still reflecting after i deleted the records for those 2 years. All the previous sample data contacts, gropus, resources and report sheet is still reflecting while i am trying to set a new school.

Is there anyway you could remotely access my system over the internet; so that you can observe what i am talking about? I set aside many weeks to familarize myself with the schooltool platform before proposing it to schools in my neighbourhood but i am having a hard time with bugs|errors. will it always continue to be like these; using schooltool 2.6 dev because i was not experiencing hardtime with schooltool 2.1 aside the new features that ain't there.

I am considering removing and installing schooltool again then upgrade to schooltool 2.6-dev since schooltool 2.1-ppa is the default for Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. what do you think?

You really should be able to move/delete the database. In the terminal, do:

sudo service schooltool stop
sudo mv /var/lib/schooltool/Data.fs /var/lib/schooltool/Data.fs.sample
sudo service schooltool start

Let me know if that doesn't work or if you get some kind of error message.

Regarding deleting the years, some things are intentionally "outside" of years, like people and contacts. This is not as clear as it should be in the interface.

If you delete a year and re-create it with the exact same id, some other data may come back. This is was inadvertent, but it is a toss-up whether it is more of a bug or a feature.

SchoolTool 2.6 just came out and has the most new features we've released in a while. For better or worse, a few bugs are inevitable, but this is definitely a peak time for new bugs to be exposed and fixed.

And to be clear, you do want to be using 2.6 from the dev repository.
