How can i upgrade from schooltool 2.1 to 2.6

Asked by Tobi Alabi

I've been researching on Student Information Management Systems for 3 years and finally i came across schooltool via wikipedia few weeks back. I realize schooltool is all i need to kick start my interest in integrating education and technology in my home country listed among the developing countries.

However, i successfully installed schooltool 2.1 via the Ubuntu software center on Ubuntu desktop 12.04 LTS. I would like to upgrade the schooltool 2.1 to 2.6 to be intime with the current version of schooltool developed. I already downloaded schooltool 2.6 zipped folder but after unzipping the folder, I can't really figure out what to do with the content in other to upgrade the default schooltool 2.1 that came with Ubuntu desktop 12.04 LTS. kindest regards; thanks.

You need to add another software source that contains the latest version, see http://book.schooltool.org/install-2_0.html#schooltool-ppa

Thanks. I clicked on the link you gave and i followed the instruction stated on the page. I added [ppa:schooltool-owners/dev] to the APT line and went back to Ubuntu software center to install school tool. After installation, i open my web broswer to access [localhost70:80] but the version of schooltool still remain 2.1. Please is there any risk if i upgrade my Ubuntu 12.04 LTS to Ubuntu 13.10, so that the default schooltool will be 2.6

There is no particular risk, particularly if you make a backup to an external drive or the cloud.

Thanks Gedimina Paulauska. Initially i used the APT line i the schooltool version still remain 2.1; so i decided to try the other option today using the comman-line/ubuntu-terminal while connected to the internet and the schooltool version was updated to 2.6.

Dear Tom Hoffman; I tried downloading Ubuntu 13.10 but after several incomplete download i was able to get Ubuntu 13.10 file. I burned it into a disk, copied it into an external flash drive and attempt to run the file by double clicking; these three(3) attempt was abortive to run Ubuntu 13.10. I resolve to try the command-line/ubuntu-terminal to upgrade from schooltool 2.1 to schooltool 2.6 while connected to internet and it was successful eventually. so, i don't need to install Ubuntu 13.10 anymore since the upgrade finally worked. Kindest regards.
