Course Stucturing for a UK based Curriculum

Asked by Andrew Richards

Hi everyone,

I am a HOD ICT at a caribbean school which follows a British style curriculum and the CIE international awards. I am looking for the best way to structure courses and classes in Schooltool.
We are a small school (150 SOR) with one class group representing a year group (with the exception of Yr. 7 where we have two sets). Our groups range from Yr. 6 (G-5) up to Yr. 13 (G-12).
What would be the best structure for setting up courses when designations like 9ICT are used to identify timetabled classes across three terms? For example, would the following set up suffice?

Course
Information Communication Technology

Sections
6IT, 7NHIT, &NJIT,9IT,10IT,11IT,12IT,13IT

Would each section need to be recorded three times to cover all terms?
Classes also have two exam components which are distinct from their term grades. Would these require separate sections?
I suspect that termly conduct grades could be added as a CANDO.

I would appreciate any comments, especially from school administrators that use a similar set up to us.

Thank you for time and patience.

Andy Richards (Britihs West Indies Collegiate, TCI)

>> I think so.

Would each section need to be recorded three times to cover all terms?

>> You can set the start and end terms when you create the section. These are "linked" sections, so the system knows they are mostly the same from term to term.

Classes also have two exam components which are distinct from their term grades. Would these require separate sections?
I suspect that termly conduct grades could be added as a CANDO.

>> Basically, you create a report sheet with whatever data you want to collect per term, so you can have a sheet with three activities: exam1, exam2, term, conduct.

>> You use CanDo if you have specific competencies/skills/etc which you are tracking per student. Yes, writing that documentation is at the top of my TODO list...

Hi Tom,

Thanks for the quick reply!

I was a little confused by the three activities on the report since there would be many activities making up the average grade for the term.

Would it not be better to create three worksheets - Term Grade, Exam Grade, & Conduct?

Andy.

Sorry,

Also forgot to ask.

Does category weighting affect all worksheets added by the teacher or can different weights be added to different worksheets/

Hi Tom

Please ignore last two messages.

I have created the aforementioned worksheets on my virtual drive version of Schooltool and applied different weightings to each worksheet.

I will probably come back to you when I get to the reporting stage and I have some marking values to work with.

Andy.

OK. We're going to be re-designing reports for the next couple months, so stay in touch.
