Is there any online documentation for installing schooltool using the source tarball on a Debian squeeze or any other operating system. The README in tarball seems obsolete.

I'm not sure what tarball you're referring to, but the instructions in the README.txt of this one work for me in Squeeze:

http://launchpad.net/schooltool/flourish/2.0.0/+download/schooltool-2.0.0.tar.gz
