Attendance Utility

I need to monitor in the nearly opposite way. Funding requires we mark and record presence explicitly in addition to absence.
We would need a days attended column as well and cannot treat null as attendance. Rather a homeroom teacher must explicitly mark a student as being in class on a given date.
Is there a way we can add a code to expressly mark a student present?
