Restore sbackup files with TAR?

Asked by Bill Hixon

Ran sbackup in Ubuntu. Moved to Fedora 14. Want to restore some files. Cannot get Archive Manager to open the backup file, it says gives an error and stops. Looking around it appears sbackup is not going to install in Fedora14. Can I restore the files I need with TAR?

Hello Bill,

sorry for the delay.

Yes, you should be able to extract file using just plain TAR.

Could you provide the error message of Archive manager? Maybe your tar file (archive) is somehow broken.

HTH,
Jean-Peer

The error message I am getting on the diff archive is:

gzip: stdin: unexpected end of file
/bin/gtar: Unexpected EOF in archive
/bin/gtar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now

The full backup gives:

gzip: stdin: unexpected end of file
/bin/gtar: Unexpected EOF in archive
/bin/gtar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now

I've rebuilt the drive and moved on, so it's no longer a critical question. Thanks for your interest.
