Wahrk Trap usage

Hello,
Since I am new in your society, congratulations on your work on Riven X. Me too, as many people who've recently discovered Riven X, did so after having played (for the nth time) MYST on the iPhone.

Enough talk;
I am having a problem in using the Wahrk Trap handle. I am not sure about it, but I think one could take the handle for a ride DOWNWARDS as well as upwards. Of course, I could be mistaken and the handle works only UPWARDS, but HOW am I gonna get into the school now that I've left the submarine in the Wahrk Trap dock?

Just tried Riven on ScummVM nightly build of 02-Jan-10 and seems like I still cannot climb the handle downwards. Is this normal? Is it a bug on Riven script? Cause I don't find it logical that once you climb the handle up to the prison to be unable to have some number lessons in the school!
