Riven X on Tiger won't start

Asked by PaulF

Jean-Francois:

I fear this report will only make you groan (oh no, not another Tiger problem!) Before I start, I wish to extend my appreciation for Riven X and all your hard work. Riven X is wonderful project, not just from a technical perspective, but in that it gives new life to one of the truly great computer games! My congratulations to you on your success!

I am attempting to start Riven X 0.83 on a PowerBook G4 (1Ghz) running Tiger 10.4.11 using the 10th Anniversary DVD. This system has QuickTime 6.7.2. Riven is not installed, in the sense that Riven X considers it installed. With the DVD mounted, clicking the Riven X icon causes it to launch., It presents two windows: the Debug Console (which says "Debug shell not supported in Mac OS X 10.4.") and a dialog to select one of the Riven Editions, from which I choose the "Myst 10th Anniversary Edition", and then the "Do Not Remember" option. At this point a new window is presented, which always remains black. The pointer changes to the "hand" cursor, and I can hear the DVD drive being accessed, but nothing else occurs; the window simply stays black.

The console log only shows

2009-08-29 18:28:15 -0400 [unknown thread] [BASE] <RXEditionManager: 0x67e8c0>: scanning /Volumes/Riven

until pressing <Command Q>, when the console shows

2009-08-29 18:36:55 -0400 [Main] [BASE] <RXWorldView: 0x4f6faf0>: tearing down

It's almost like Riven X cannot read the DVD. Terminal shows that the DVD is mounted:

and indeed, Riven is playable (albeit quite slowly) using the original Riven application running under Classic. Riven X 0.83 runs fine using this same DVD on my G5 iMac (2 Ghz) running Leopard.

Any thoughts? Is there anything you would suggest I try?

Thank you for your time, and efforts. Please keep up the wonderful job!

Can you please attach the Riven X log to the bug I have created for this question? The log can be found at your home folder > Library > Logs > Riven X > Riven X.log. Thank you.

I have dropped support for Tiger. Riven X will require Mac OS X 10.5 "Leopard" or later.

Can you help with this problem?
